Bioethics Discussion(Terrence Clark II)

Bioethics Discussion(Terrence Clark II)

Chapter 1 - Martin Needs Medical Treatment (or does he?)
1. What is wrong with Martin?
Martin is albino, which means his skin has no color.
2. Do you think that Martin should have genetic treatment (if it were possible) to correct his problem? Why or why not?
I do not think he should get treatment (if it were possible) unless that is what he truly desired. I take this stance because it is apart of him and it is his decision on what he does with his body.
3. Do you think Martin should avoid having children in order to not pass along his condition? Why or why not?
Martin's condition is not infectious so it is once again up to him if he decides to avoid or associate with other children.
4. What is the difference between ethical, legal, and social issues?
Ethical issues are issues that involve controversial decisions that people take varying stances on because of their moral grounds.
Social issues are issues that influence society.
legal issue are a question of law or fact disputed by parties.
5. Chapter Vocabulary (Define these words)
albino- a person or animal having a congenital absence of pigment in the skin and hair (which are white) and the eyes (which are typically pink).
genetics-the study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics.
pigment-the natural coloring matter of animal or plant tissue.
gene-a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring.

Bioethics Discussion (Saiswan &'d Ronjae)

1. What is wrong with Martin?
Martin is an albino which means that his skin has no color. He is very pale and his hair is white, and he doesn't see very well.

2. Do you think that Martin should have genetic treatment (if it were possible) to correct his problem? Why or why not?
If it was possible to get the genetic treatment I believe that he should get the treatment, because if Martin plans on having kids and doesn't what them to obtain it than it would best if he was to get a treatment. An your skin having no color can effect you in certain weather and cause more damage to be done to your body.

3. Do you think Martin should avoid having children in order to not pass along his condition? Why or why not?
Yes I believe that martin should avoid having kids because when having kids this a human disorder that travels. This disorder transfers from parent to offspring, so its better if Martin doesn't what to have his kids with this to not have any at all.

4. What is the difference between ethical, legal, and social issues?
The difference between these three are that ethics, social issues is a moral or what's right. While legal is dealing more with protection of laws and what regulations provide.

5. Chapter Vocabulary (Define these words)
albino -a person or animal having a congenital absence of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes.
pigment - natural coloring of tissue.

gene - a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to a offspring.
genetics - they study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics.

Chapter 1 - Martin Needs Medical Treatment (or does he?)
1. What is wrong with Martin?

Martin is an albino.

2. Do you think that Martin should have genetic treatment (if it were possible) to correct his problem? Why or why not?

Martin should not get the genetic treatment because he is fine just the way he is. He shouldnt let the kids bother him and his mother should really love him for who he is. She shouldnt second guess his apperance.

3. Do you think Martin should avoid having children in order to not pass along his condition? Why or why not?

Martin should not avoid having kids because his kids might come out different. Even if they are albino, they are still people too.

4. What is the difference between ethical, legal, and social issues?

Ethics is a moral system and what you think is right or wrong. Legal issues have to do with it being part of the law and it has to be done. Social issues have to deal with society and fitting in with everyone else or just trying to be you.

5. Chapter Vocabulary (Define these words)
albino - a group of inherited disorders characterized by little or no melanin production
genetics- is the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in living organisms. It is generally considered a field of biology, but it intersects frequently with many of the life sciences and is strongly linked wih the study of information systems.

pigment- is a material that changes the color of reflected or transmitted light as the result of wavelength-selective absorption.

gene- is a locus (or region) of DNA that encodes a functional RNA or protein product, and is the molecular unit of heredity.

Instructions: Each chapter describes a scenario where a decision must be made about a medical treatment. Read the scenarios and think about the problem. As a group, read the scenario you are assigned and discuss the answers to the questions. You will be assigned several chapters for your group to read. At the end, your group will share your story with the rest of the class. Today, everyone will read chapter 1 and work with one other person to complete this task.
