1. All mammals have vertebrates, they are endothermic, produce milk, and have hair on their skin.
2. A domestic pig and a wild hog are from the same family which is the Suidae family. They have the same internal structure. However the domestic pig have a longer life span than the wild hog due to the hunting of wild hogs.
3. A pig is pregnant for 112-115 days. Humans are pregnant for 10 months.
4. The hoof is more distal to the elbow.
5. The ear is anterior to the snout. The tail is dorsal to the umbilical cord. The thigh is ventral to the back. The tail is posterior to the ear.

1. What are some characteristics shared by all mammals?

Some characteristics shared by all mammals are hair and mammary glands. They also have a single dentary bone called the mandible. 

2.  How are domestic pigs related to wild hogs found in some states?

Domestic pigs live longer but dont live that long because they get turned into food first. Hogs and pigs are from the same family group: Artiodactyla. 

3. What is the length of a pigs birth cycle in pigs?  How does this compare to humans? The pigs birth cycle is 112-115 days long. A human's birth cycle is 9 months long which is way longer than a pig's. 

4.  Which is more distal to the elbow- the wrist or the hoof?

The wrist is more distal to the elbow. 

5.  Post a picture of the pig and give the orientation using the following terms, anterior, posterior, dorsal , and ventral.

The snout is anterior to the heart.

The spine is posterior to the lungs.

The kidney is dorsal to the heart.

The diaphgram is inferior to the lungs.

Chapter 1 - Martin Needs Medical Treatment (or does he?)


1) What is wrong with Martin?

• Martin has a skin pigmentation disorder; he is very pale with white hair. His eyes are sensitive to strong light and if exposed to the sun, he can risk getting sun burn and/or skin cancer.

2) Do you think Martin should have genetic treatment (if it possible) to correct his problem? Why or why not?

• I think Martin should undergo genetic treatment because he would be able to regain eyes and skin color, as well as, not be sensitive to the sun and laughed at. He would simply have a happy life.

3) Do you think Martin should avoid having children in order o no pass along his condition? Why or why not?

• I think Martin should not avoid having children due to the risk of passing his condition to his offspring because as long as he have sex with a non albino, he most likely has at least a 50/50 chance to not pass it on to his offspring.

4) What is the difference between ethical, legal, and social issues?

• An ethical issue consists of morality and principals to solve a conflict. Legal issues are concerns that arise from the law. Social issues are issues that influences a considerable number of individuals within a society.

5) Chapter vocabulary

• Albino -A person or animal having a congenital absence of pigment in the skin and hair
• Genetics -The study of heredity and the variation of inherited characteristics.
• Pigment -The natural coloring matter of animal or plant tissue.
• Gene -A unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring.

Chapter 2 - Priya should find out if she has inherited a fatal disease (or should she?)


1) Describe the disease Priya's mother had?

•  Priya's mother had an illness called Huntington's disease. The disease is a genetic disorder that affects muscle coordination and leads to mental decline and behavioral symptoms, such as, twitching and not being able to control speech and body movements.

2)  If you were Priya, would you get tested for this disease? Why or Why not?

• If I was Priya I would get tested because I would want to know if I have the disease or not. In particular, I would want to know so I can prevent passing it on to my children.

3) If Priya is tested and found to have the gene for the disease, who else has a right to know?

• If she Priya found out that she have the gene for the disease her family and friends should be informed, but I think her boyfriend and children should have the right to know.

4) What are the pros and cons of having this genetic test performed?

• Pros of getting tested are finding out and being on the safe side. Cons are finding out and it destroying your social life, such as, losing your family and friends or attempting suicide.

5) Chapter vocabulary

• Stethoscope genetic counseling -The counseling of individuals with established or potential genetic problems, concerned with inheritance patterns and risks to future offspring.
• Mutation -Is a permanent alteration of the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism, virus, or extrachromosomal DNA or other genetic elements.
• Human Genome Project -Is an international scientific research project with the goal of determining the sequence of chemical base pairs which make up human DNA, and of identifying and mapping all of the genes of the human genome from both a physical and functional standpoint.
• Disorder -A state of confusion.

6. Describe the disease Priya's mother had ?

Her mom had Huntington disease, which is an inherited disease and its a progressive breakdown of nerves in the brain.

7. If you were Priya's would you get tested for the disease? Why not? 

I would get tested because the disease is something that you can inherit and that means when your in middle age which is when the disease occurs you could also have it so its better to know and not have to worry than stress and worry forever. 

8. If Priya's is tested and found to have the gene for the disease, who else has right to know? (her family, her employers, her boyfriend...) Explain your answer.

Anyone she wants to know has the right if she doesn't want nobody to know than they shouldn't know because its her life and maybe she doesn't want nobody feeling bad for her and worrying about her. so if she decides to tell anyone she can. If she doesn't want to than she doesn't have to.

9. What are the pros (good points) and cons (bad points) of having this genetic tested performed?

Pros- You would know and live your life in a better way, also you will let they worry go that you have or don't have it once you get tested.

Cons- Getting tested can also be a bad thing because, once you know you know and you have no way to not think about it. You may let the fact that you know it will stress you out and maybe take control over your thinking.

Stethoscope genetic counseling- is extremely important for anyone wanting to get information about their genes. Which they get for counseling from professional advisors who are experts on genetics and get great information that can possible help you.

mutation- mutation is a change that occurs to the order of the bases of the appearing in the DNA inside a cell.

Human Genome Project- scientists from around the world who decided to learn the language of the genes.
