Blog Post # 2 (Terrence & Malik)

1. Approximately how many days from ferilization would your pig be if it measured 2 inches in length?( Hint: first, convert to cm.)
5.08 cm ~66 days

2. Why is the skin such an important organ? List 3 functions of the skin.
The skin is an important organ in making sure this three functions are handled.
  1. protection
  2. regulation
  3. sensation

3. Why does inhaled air need to be warmed, filtered, and moistened?
To remove all solid substances from it along with the moisture to make sure the lungs do not dry out.

4. How do materials pass back and forth between the fetus and the mother?
The fetus is connected to the placenta by a tube called the umbilical cord. The cord contains two arteries and a vein. Substances pass back and forth between the mother's and fetus's blood through the placenta and cord. Oxygen and nutrients pass from the mother to the fetus.
5. What is the function of the hard palate?
The hard palate is made up of ridges and is located on the roof of the mouth, which separates the oral and nasal cavities; this makes it possible to eat and breathe simultaneously.

6. How old was your pig? How did you determine the age and what was your length?
100~ birth
We determined age based on the the size of the pig and the length of the pig was 26.5 cm.

1.   Approximately how many days from ferilization would your pig be if it measured 2 inches in length?( Hint: first, convert to cm.)
It will take up to 30-40 days.

2.  Why is the skin such an important organ?  List 3 functions of the skin.

It is a barrier from ultraviolet radiation, it keeps out harmful substances and disease-producing organisms and aids in regulating the body temperature.

3.  Why does inhaled air need to be warmed, filtered, and moistened?
So it doesn't damage the tissue inside the lungs.

4.  How do materials pass back and forth between the fetus and the mother?
Substances pass back and forth between the mother's and fetus's blood through the placenta and cord.

    5.  What is the function of the hard palate?
It is formed by the palatine process of the maxilla and horizontal plate of palatine bone, and spans the arch formed by the upper teeth.

    6.  How old was your pig?  How did you determine the age and what was your length?
We measured the pig to determine the age. Since our pig was 36cm, it was 115 days old.

      Questions

      1. It would take 114 days from fertilization for a pig to be the measuring length of 2 inches.

      2. The skin is such an important organ because it protects all the other organs within the body.

      3. Inhaled air need to warmed, filtered, and moistened because cool air changes your body temperature and you need air to keep your lungs moistened.

      4. Materials pass back and forth between the fetus and the mother substances like blood and oxygen goes back and forth between the fetus and a mother.

      5. The function of the hard palate is a very thin bony plate of the skull. That can be found in the roof of the mouth.

      6. Our pig was 115 days which is about 3 months. We determine the age base on the length which was 36cm.

      Questions

      1.   Approximately how many days from ferilization would your pig be if it measured 2 inches in length?( Hint: first, convert to cm.)

If the pig is 2 inches in length then the pig is 2 days from ferilization.

      2.  Why is the skin such an important organ?  List 3 functions of the skin.

Protection, Heat regulation,Excertion, Secretion, and Absorption are some functiona of the skin. Skin is important because it protects your internal organs, regulates your body temperature and tells how your body is doing.

      3.  Why does inhaled air need to be warmed, filtered, and moistened?

The air needs to be filtered because if your breathe in dirty air then it can damage your lungs. The air need to be warm because we have a body temperature regulator and if the temperature is not regulated, the body function is not optimize.

      4.  How do materials pass back and forth between the fetus and the mother?

The fetus is connected to the placenta by a tube called the umbilical cord. The cord contains two arteries and a vein. Blood and oxygen are pass through the placenta and cord.

      5.  What is the function of the hard palate?

The hard palate separates the oral and nasa cavaities, bordering the oral cavity superiorly and forming the roof of the mouth and the nasal cavity inferiorly forming its floor.

      6.  How old was your pig?  How did you determine the age and what was your length?

Our pig was at birth. We determined the pig's age by measuring the pig from head to toe in centimeters. Our pig was 30cm long.

All mammals have mammary glands and hair
      mammals reproduce sexually
all mammals except whales have two sets of teeth
      all mammals are vertebrates
      all mammals are endothermic
      2. How are domestic pigs related to wild hogs found in some states?
domesticated pigs are same species, wild hogs are their ancestors. they share same lifespan and are omnivores.
      3. What is the length of a pigs birth cycle in pigs? How does this compare to humans?
      112 and 115 days
      4. Which is more distal to the elbow- the wrist or the hoof?
      the hoof

      5. Post a picture of the pig and give the orientation using the following terms, anterior, posterior, dorsal , and ventral.

      External Anatomy (Saiswan,Ronjae)

      1. 59 days away from fertilization.
      2. The skin regulates body temperture, protect the body from radiation, and excreats toxic substances through sweat.
      3. Inhaled air needs to be warm, filtered and moist becasue cold air lowers the body temperature, dry air can dry out the lungs and dirty air can cause infections or diseases.
      4. Materials pass back and forth between the fetus and the mother by using the umbilical cord.
      5. The hard palate is used to prtect the mouth.
      6. Our pig was supposed to be born. It was 40cm. We determined the age by measuring the length of the pig.

      1. What are some characteristics shared by all mammals?
      • Are vertebrates (which means they have a backbone or spine).
      • Have hair on their bodies.
      • Produce milk to feed their babies.
      2. How are domestic pigs related to wild hogs found in some states?

      • Domestic pigs can live 15-20 years, but most become pork chops, bacon, and sausage long before that.

      3. What is the length of a pigs birth cycle in pigs? How does this compare to humans?
      • Although the number of piglets born will increase if mating is postponed, The results from a number of research trials comparing litter size after mating. Pregnancy rates were 69.6% for animals bred at first estrus and 77.4% when a high proportion of aborted human fetuses but not in those from domesticated mammals.
      4. Which is more distal to the elbow- the wrist or the hoof?
      • Distal is away from the center of body trunk or point of attachment. The wrist is farther away from center of body trunk.
      5. Post a picture of the pig and give the orientation using the following terms, anterior, posterior, dorsal , and ventral.
The tail is posterior to the umbilical cord.
The lungs are ventral to the spine.
The Heart is anterior to the kidneys.
The Spleen is dorsal to the stomach.

Some characteristics shared by all mammals are hair and mammary glands. They also have a single dentary bone called the mandible.

      2.  How are domestic pigs related to wild hogs found in some states?

Domestic pigs live longer but dont live that long because they get turned into food first. Hogs and pigs are from the same family group: Artiodactyla.

      3. What is the length of a pigs birth cycle in pigs?  How does this compare to humans? The pigs birth cycle is 112-115 days long. A human's birth cycle is 9 months long which is way longer than a pig's.

      4.  Which is more distal to the elbow- the wrist or the hoof?

The wrist is more distal to the elbow.

      5.  Post a picture of the pig and give the orientation using the following terms, anterior, posterior, dorsal , and ventral.

The snout is anterior to the heart.
The spine is posterior to the lungs.
The kidney is dorsal to the heart.
